The project was part of a section 106 agreement reached between Barratt Homes and Peterborough City Council when the housing giant built 500 homes on the old British Sugar Site in Peterborough. The L-shaped development has plugged the 2.7 hectare gap between the eastern extent of the British Sugar estate and Wharf Road.
The overall project entailed a new pavilion completed by Kier Eastern, which has already won numerous design awards, two natural football pitches; one adult, at the front of the development and one junior, a fully floodlit four court 20mm monofilament surface Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) as well as all landscaping and hard-scaping including a car park for over 40 cars. The artificial all weather pitch will be situated next to the junior football pitch and will be big enough for four tennis courts/five-a-side football pitches.
Cllr Lee, who is also city council cabinet member for community services, spoke of his delight of the project which was recently completed. He said:
“It’s a boost for the area and I’m really pleased. It’s been four years in the making and is now the third community centre in the ward.â€
The project has been so well received by the local community that Peterborough Town Football Club are to make the facility the 1st teams training facility.
